# CKLA330 M2 - The Design Competition
The Gateway to Toronto Metropolitan University Design Competition offers young designers a chance to contribute to the University Master Plan's vision and principles. The winning project will be honored with the Shawn Gallaugher Design Excellence Award.
Participants, specifically students enrolled in CKLA 330 Project Studio, are tasked with designing a dynamic, sustainable urban open space aligned with the needs of RU and its community. Stage I involves submitting a proposal, including a Design Statement and an Experience Statement outlining the project's vision and team qualifications.
Eight themes were used during the master planning process, distilled into three goals with accompanying principles.
**Three Goals**
- Urban Intensification
- People First: Pedestrianization of the Urban Environment, and
- A Commitment to Design Excellence.
**Eight Themes**
- Design Excellence
- Sustainability
- Environmental Protection
- Adaptable Management

- Circulation
- Linkage & Connection
- Safety
- Season Use & Passive Activities.
- The updated plan envisions the campus as advanced in sustainable development, embracing reconciliation, supporting safety and security, and embedding accessibility.

Digital drawings should elucidate the team's design intent and solutions, while the report integrates narrative, graphics, and photos covering various aspects such as design philosophy, site challenges, and lighting strategy. Entries are evaluated based on formal mastery, environmental innovation, consideration of human needs, architectural functionality, and program integration.
